Aranui Rest Home visit

Today, half of Room 23 went to Aranui Rest Home to spend time with some of their clients. We had an awesome time! Although some of us were a bit shy to begin with, it didn't take long before everyone was chatting and laughing like best mates! The respectful, caring and positive attitudes shown by all of the students was just amazing - they represented themselves and their school with pride.
Before we left, we sang Tamariki Owairaka to them, which they all seemed to enjoy! This visit is the start of what we hope will be a long term relationship with Aranui. Our next exchange will be at the start of Term 2 when some of the Aranui people will join us for Garden to Table.

  1. What a great collection of photos to show us the start of your special relationship with these awesome elders. You guys might want to check out this photo series as a way of helping you think about the people you meet in a different way.

I think it’s really cool that you went to go and visit those people in the rest home. I would like to do that with my class one day. It’s nice that you had pictures up of almost everyone.

I always get a bit nervous when I go and visit my grandma in her rest home. Did you guys know anyone in the rest home?

Did you all just get put in pairs or groups or did you move around and see different people? I would really like to hear the song that you sung to them sometime. Maybe you could put it on the blog?

I really Like your pictures that you have posted on your blog, what were you doing with the clients? Were you reading?

A while ago Karoro school’s Kapa Haka group performed to some clients from a rest home and they loved it!
    Well done Room 23!

I thought it was cool that yous went to see the elderly people in the rest home. I thought it was also cool before you left you sung them a song which I thought was nice. It's nice you had photos of basically everyone.

Did you guys get put in groups or did you get to go around to the different elders? Sometime soon I would like to hear the song you sung to the elders, maybe sometime you could put it on the blog.

Have you been to a rest home before?

  8. Haii half of R23,
I think it was really nice of you all to vist the Aranui rest home! It reminded me of when my great nana was in a rest home and when we visted her all the other people in the rest home would talk to us and ask us if we wanted a biscuit, even though they didn’t have any (:

In the a lot of the pictures, it looks like you were reading picture books to them?
I think they would of enjoyed your company (:

  9. Kia ora Ruma 23,
I think it’s really nice that you have gone and visited the Aranui rest home. my school has also done something like that. We went to our rest home in greymouth and performed some kapahaka, they really enjoyed it and we each got a packet of chips. I also like how you have your very own school song that you sung to them.

I really like how you have put quite a few photos of Ruma 23 having a great time at the Aranui rest home. I have a question for Room 23 what did you share with the people you meet there and why?

I think that it is really nice that you have gone to visit the old people in the rest home. Its really kind that you are thinking about the other people in the community, Because some of their families might not go and visit them.

I remember once I went to our local rest home and performed some kapahaka to them. They really enjoyed it. In fact they enjoyed it so much they gave us each a little packet of chips.

Next time you go to the rest home you could bring some food from you garden and have a little morning tea with them.
